We just want every cat owner to be aware of the risk of Cytauxzoonosis (Bobcat Fever) in our area. This disease is transmitted by a tick bite, and despite new advances in treatment options, it is often fatal. The organism attacks and destroys the red blood cells, and cats usually show signs of disease about 10 days after they have been bitten. Clinical signs often include lethargy, pale gums, and breathing fast. While there are treatments available, they can be quite extensive and potentially expensive, and in many areas the survival rate, with treatment, is still much lower than the national average of 60%. There are different strains of this organism in different areas, and some cause more severe and less curable disease than others. Cats that do survive are considered to be possible reservoirs for the organism for life, and therefore should be kept strictly indoors to prevent infecting other cats. This is an organism that only infects cats, and does not pose a threat to humans. Given that a tick can ride into your home on your pant leg, we do highly recommend that all cats be protected by one of the better tick control products. Please be aware that some of the products that used to work well may not be as effective as they used to be. The fluralaner and sarolaner products (like Bravecto and Revolution Plus) offer the best protection currently
